Procrastination Horse is a Bad Influence

He's watching you! And someone to your right.
When I find myself stressed out and near a doll grab I usually permit myself to waste a dollar on it. And between the dog and the kids someone is usually happy enough to take custody of my winnings. Monday night I won this crazy eyed horse and dubbed him Procrastination Horse. He's brightly colored and looks interesting and fun...but isn't really anything worth getting distracted by--much like every TV show, book, or random project that comes up whenever it is supposed to be study time.

I'm going to put him on top of the shelves in my desk so he can watch over me and remind me that studying is more important than fun looking stuff without any purpose or substance.

  3. Hi. Thank you so much for your blog !! I am a mother returning to school with my sights set on this program at Duke. Right now, my problem is no job or shadowing experience. I am starting to get the word out that I am looking for something to help me get some hours for my application next fall. I would love to know what kind of training or shadowing opportunites others had that were accepted to the program. Any advice on where to look would be appreciated too ! (I am in Wilmington NC, if that helps or matters )
Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience with the world -- it has made me so much more excited to get there !

  4. Hello :) I can say that for myself I worked as a grossing tech for 3.5 years before starting at Duke. I didn't do all human specimen types a PA does like the breast and large colon specimens for cancer and autopsies, but I did most everything else. We also had a veterinary department though and I did every tissue type for animals up to necropsies. My classmates' experiences are varied. Two others also worked in grossing, one mostly on dermatological specimens and one doing the full spectrum up to acting as a diener. Two did research that included aspects of grossing/histology (one as an undergraduate, one as a professional). One worked in phlebotomy at a hospital while an undergrad and was able to shadow in her hospital's pathology department. I know another one worked in a hospital (I'm not sure as what! I think it was as a med tech but I'm not 100%) and shadowed there. And I know the last guy at least shadowed.

I think a lot of people have had success with the AAPA referring them to someone to shadow (they can be contacted at info@pathassist.org ). Otherwise you could try googling Pathology in Wilmington and calling the medical director of any path labs that pop up. You can also try contacting the local hospitals. Good luck!
